Singapore, 8 September 09 World Scientific is sponsoring Singapore's top Science student to attend the Nobel Prize Presentation Ceremony. Nicholas Chen Fang Yew, 18, from NUS High School, will be flying to Stockholm in December.
Nicholas was chosen out of 10 nominated top science students by a distinguished panel of judges from the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research) A*STAR. His humble personality coupled with his depth of knowledge about science and his passion for research gave him the winning edge, according to the judges.
Together with other international delegates, Nicholas will be visiting the Karolinska Institute of Medicine and its laboratories, the Royal Institute of Technology, the Nobel museum and will be invited to the receptions of the Nobel Foundation and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The highlight of his week will include attending the Nobel Ceremony followed by the Nobel Banquet and Nobel Ball at the Stockholm City Hall. More than 1000 guests will be present at the festivities, including the Nobel laureates and the Swedish Royalties.
World Scientific Chairman and founder, Dr KK Phua, said, "As a scientific publisher, we are in the business of disseminating knowledge and connecting great minds. Sponsoring the top science student in Singapore to attend the Nobel ceremony is one of the ways by which we try to build up the appetite of the youth in Singapore for research. We have sponsored this program for the past 11 years and we will continue to do our part for the local community through similar programs."
World Scientific was awarded the exclusive rights in 1991 by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm to publish the lectures of Nobel Laureates from 1971 to 1990 and to distribute them worldwide. Subsequently, World Scientific again obtained the rights to publish the complete series of Nobel Lectures delivered from 1901 to 2005.
